Fear Not

Fear Not

There are 365 mentions of the phrase Fear Not in the Bible, one for every day.
Gen 15:1

Gen 26:24

The only fear in the Bible is the fear of God. Fear is the enemy of confidence. Fear not means don't run.
(Joyce Meyer Do it Afraid).

Isaiah 41:10,13,14

Matt 10:28-31

Especially in the light of 9-11, the enemy wants to instill fear in us, but Jesus said, they can kill your body but they can't kill our spirit.
There was a church near the WTC that was still standing after the other buildings fell down.

Luke 12:4-7

To Zacharias and Mary, the angel said "Fear not."

Luke 5:10 Jesus said to Simon, "Fear not."

1 John 4:18 Fear and faith are the opposites. Some have said, fear is faith in the negative.

The God of peace will be with you.

Revelation 1:17; 2:10

Actually, it's not true that "fear not" occurs 365 times in the Bible. After doing a search for "fear not" in an online version of the Authorized Version, "fear not" came up only 75 times, including those occurrences in the Apocryphal books (those not recognized as canonical by Protestant churches). That there are 365 "fear nots" in the Bible is a fiction.

It is not the actual words "fear not" that occur 365 times in the bible. It is the reference to not having fear because Jesus is watching over us that occurs that many times.

Here’s what I found in the NIV, doing a search of “fear/s/ed” and “afraid”, and then manually working through the list of relevant hits:

“do not be afraid” - 65
“don’t be afraid” - 24
“do not fear” - 18
“do not be afraid” - 2
“do not be fainthearted or afraid” - 1
“do not lose heart or be afraid” - 1
“do not give way to fear” - 1
“fear not” - 1

Nothing like 365, any way you slice it.

it depends on what bibel are you reading. King James or something else. Message is the same, words maybe different...

In Greens Literal Bibel:

“do not be afraid” - 21
“don’t be afraid” - 0
“do not fear” - 69
“fear not” - 1
and so on...

King James version & American standard:

“do not be afraid” - 0
“don’t be afraid” - 0
“do not fear” - 0
“fear not” - 63
and so on...

Does it matter if it is 365 times or 356 times or something else. Point is that God loves us and gives us peace in Jesus. He does not want us to be afraid, anyway...

Be blessed...

I used every synonym in the thesaurus and an online "authorized" KJV version of the Bible that allows you to look up key words. After extensive research into any teaching or reference about not being afraid or not fearing, there is absolutely not 365 references to this of any sort. I am pretty sure this concept came from a Christian movie called "Facing the Giants." I read every verse containing these words. Thousands of verses and several hours later, I can confidently say that there is no reference to this 365 times. It doesn't matter which version of the Bible you read, because they all should be translated into the same meaning. If there are more verses in another translation that refer to this topic, it merely means that someone has incorrecly translated or misread the original Word of God, and perhaps taken it out of context. Every scripture has a context and must be taken in such said context.

I am trying to help a friend that is dealing with fear. I want to give him a verse from the bible every day for the next year that deals with fear. Do any of you kno of devotional books or any other resource that may list them or would the thing to do be to just search for these scriptures electronically?

First an foremost, why do we have to argue about "how many times" it says in the Bible "fear not"?
What about things that may say... "Perfect love casts out fear?" I would take that as... "fear not" wouldn't you??!

Think about it.. theres much more to the Bible than what meets the eye. Theres mysteries we have not yet, I have not yet tapped into..

According to this post (http://www.baptistboard.com/showthread.php?t=4381),

It doesn't appear 365 times, proof that we need to find out things for ourselves and test things.

But still, "fear not" is a command, regardless of how many times it appears in the Bible.

Well... I am researching this.. because I have heard it many times before, the fact that there are 365 "fear not" 's in the Bible. What I found so far is that they vary. I found "Fear not" "Do not be Afraid" "Have no fear" and many variations of the sort.. so far I have found 118 of them.. what I did find is that there are "commands" or so to speak that tell us to "Fear God" and there are over 365 of those in the Bible. Perhaps in a way by telling us to "fear God" and God only is like telling us to "fear not" of other things..??

...first off i've always been taught to only read KJV...simply because the new ones add in some spots and take away in others...second it doesn't matter how many times you read and count fear not...all that matters is God is with you. if you have someone as powerful and amazing as God in your life you shouldn't fear anyways...just trust that he's in control!!

I just recently heard myself that "fear not" is in the bible 365times and decided to do my own research. Maybe it isn't in there 365 times, maybe it is. I will know more when I am finished. All I know is after like the 50th time of reading do not fear, I get the point. And why should I fear with God on my side?

At 1:14 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I am doing my own research b/c I want to deal with fear personally. It has been a rich journey and well worth the effort. I am finding that fear is the first step down a slippery slope of discouragement, dismay and terror. All of these are mentioned in Scripture. All of them are sin -- lack of belief, faith, and trust. How many are there in the Bible? Don't know, but I do know that God will reiterate as many times as I need to hear it and will show me again and again new things in the Scriptures if I want to see ...

someone asked if it matters if fear not is mentioned 365 times. No it doesn't matter. However, we as believers need to quit making the statement if it is not true. It erodes our integrity.

At 11:42 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I guess it does not matter that there are or aren't 365 "fear nots" listed in the Bible per say. What we need to remember is that in many verses God commands us to fear (respect) only Him and to not fear (be scared of) the darkness around us because He reigns victorious. Be brave and courageous! Greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world. Those commands stand for not only every day of the year, but every day of our lives. Thus, you have 365...and I bet God includes Leap Year also!

I have been trying to answer this question for two years. I just released a book ("Defeating Fear") and wanted to reference the 365 verses. I found nothing to back this up.
I love the banter here and I agree that it really does not matter how many times it is listed, but we do need to walk in integrity as Christians and speak those things which we know to be true. We serve an awesome God who created the universe and all that fills it. What can compare with that truth and the fact that He sent His son to die for us?
So as we step out, let us speak the truth in love and let His light shine through us as He reveals His truth and exposes all of the lies of the enemy.

You might find Dr Lloyd Ogilvie's book: Steps to living without fear, useful - refer to URL below in which he covers the 366 bible texts on 'fear not'(yes, including one for a leap year!): http://ygenerationforum.blogspot.com/2009/07/steps-to-living-without-fear-by-lloyd.html

Also referred to by acclaimed author John Ortberg in his book : "If you want to walk in water, you've got to get out of the boat".

re: "Does it matter if it is 365 times or 356 times or something else."

It DOES matter. Posting untrue fluff "facts" in the name of preaching God's Word weakens the Christian position. It begs the question, "Can we believe ANYTHING these Christians spew forth from their bully pulpits?"

Please note I'm not discounting God's encouragement for us to live with trust in Him. What I'm opposed to is the idea that someone purposely passes on an untruth in the name of faith.

Please stop making up these things. It gives little credibility to any truth in whatever bible version you're using.

You're not taking into account "Fear not" is the same as "Be not afraid" and "Do not worry."

Give him one verse on which he is to meditate.

1.) Joshua 1:9
Be strong. Be courageous.
Do not be discouraged. Do not be afraid.
For the Lord your God will be wit you wherever you go.

God hath not hiven us a spirit of fear. But of power. And of love. And of a sound mind.

He will neither leave us nor forsake us.

Matthew 17:20
If ye have faith as a grain of mustardseed nothing shall be impossible unto you.
